Chabad Rabbonim call for Bochurim to get married younger. But will it work?

In a rare move, Rabbanei Chabad and mashpi’im in Yeshivas Tomchei Tmimim in Israel and worldwide have signed a letter calling upon bochurim to get married earlier.

A month ago, it was announced that Chabad Rabbanim are thinking of abolishing Shiur Daled in an effort to encourage the bochurim to get married younger.

The letter states, “Our letter is part of an appeal from Chabad Rabbis around the world to call upon each of us to deal with the reality that has been created in recent years, to break free from a certain ‘generally accepted assumption’ and to follow the opinions and philosophy espoused by Torah and Chassidus and on the authority of the Rebbe.

“Unfortunately, in recent years, it has become the situation among the Tmimim that after yeshiva, some of them don’t return to a suitable yeshiva framework. And in the period preceding engagement and marriage, they are not in a suitable framework to prepare them for marriage.

“For the sake of their future home, they should be getting married at a younger age. It is better that the character of their home will follow the Rebbe’s blessing, ‘that they should build a house in Israel, an eternal edifice upon the foundations of Torah and the mitzvah that they should be illuminated by the light of the Torah – this is the Torah of Chassidus.’”

The original letter and accompanying booklet were first composed in Crown Heights.

Rabbi Yochanan Gurary, Chief Rabbi of Holon and a member of Beis Din Rabbanei Chabad, who signed the letter, said that the reason for the letter is the new situation.

“The generation has changed,” he said. “It’s no longer what it used to be. Today, the less time that one hangs around, the better, and especially for those who have finished ‘kvutza.’ The quicker they get married, the healthier it is, both for the boy and the girl.”

Chabad Chassidim are supposed to receive the letter in the mail this week (as deliveries were delayed due to the general strike in Israel).
