Lod Schools Go on Strike

Posted Sunday, Feb 19 2012 7:22pm in Chabad News, Israel

As we reported yesterday, due to the dangerous conditions in Chabad schools in Lod, a strike has been declared.

The parents of the children enrolled at the Talmud Torah received the following letter:

The PTA of the educational institutions in the Chabad neighborhood would like to draw your attention to the security (and sanitation) hazards that exist in the area’s schools.

We have already described the main problems in a letter that we have sent to those responsible in the municipality and to a long list of other bodies that are handling the schools.

It is important to note that over the years, the school principals have approached the city. We, the council members, have also contacted them, but all we have received in return is being ignored and continued, calculated mockery.

We have used every means at our disposal, but to no avail.

We planned to make one more protest to the municipality before going on strike, but last Friday’s incident in which a schoolboy was injured by a falling tree has brought us to the realization that any further delay could literally cost a human life. Anyone who has seen the damage caused to the sheltering of the girls’ kindergarten can only think about what would have happened if the girls had been there when the tree fell.

As parents, we can’t continue to allow this negligence to continue. We need to say that we have had enough.

We hope that this appeal to the city will lead to immediate repairs being carried out. If we don’t see any real gestures from the municipality by tomorrow, we will have to declare a strike, and the schools will be closed from Tuesday onwards.

Cooperation and responsibility from the parents in this struggle will give the PTA the power to confront the various authorities when it comes to trying to obtain other necessities.

We are aware of the inconvenience that this will cause us as parents, but our children’s lives come first!
